The Maseno
Mission Hospital School of Nursing began in 1935 training assistant
midwives. This program was
phased
out when the need for enrolled nurses was identified in Kenya. This
enrolled nurses program continued at Maseno Mission Hospital School
of Nursing for a number of years. In 1991, the Nursing Council of
Kenya made the transition to the 2½-year Kenyan Enrolled Community
Health Nurse (KECHN) program which required new educational and
training standards.
Over the
years, the Maseno Mission Hospital School of Nursing has experienced
closure by the Nursing Council of Kenya due to circumstances beyond
their control - eg. lack of patients/services. However, since 2003
the
Nursing
program has stabilized, recruiting and educating students in the
3½-year Kenyan Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) programwith
the approval of the Kenyan Nursing Council. Currently, the program
enrolls 24 students per year.
The Maseno
Mission Hospital School of Nursing will grow strength to strength as
they continue in their quest for quality nursing education.
